What you have actually observed

One attempt, on one route, at one moment, did not complete. The other two did. That is the whole of the evidence, and it is thinner than it feels because a single attempt is a single sample.

The one thing it does establish firmly is that your own side is working, because the two that answered went through the same connection and the same software as the one that did not.

That inference is the real value

Being able to rule out your own side in one move is worth more than anything else in this section. A reader with a single address cannot do it and will spend the next ten minutes wondering whether the problem is theirs.

What it does not establish

• That the quiet route is retired, broken or gone. One attempt is not a state.
• That the other two are better, which is the ranking described in assuming a ranking.

• That the quiet one will still be quiet in an hour, or was quiet an hour ago.

The right response

1. Use one of the ones that answered. That is what they are for and no further thought is required.
2. Do not remove the quiet one from your store. It is a string, it has not changed, and it may well answer next time.
3. Do not go looking for a replacement for it. Nothing needs replacing.
4. Do not draw any conclusion about the market.

Why the second point matters

Readers prune. One address does not open, they delete it, and their set of three becomes a set of two without any decision having been made. Repeat that twice over a long enough period and the set is one.

A quiet route is not a wrong route. Removing it converts a temporary observation into a permanent loss of an option, and there is no way to get it back except from a source, which is exactly the position the set exists to keep you out of.

How long to wait before caring

This site will not give a number, because a number would be an invention. What can be said is that a single quiet attempt supports nothing, a second attempt some time later supports a little, and the same route being quiet across separate sittings while the others answer is the only pattern worth noticing.

Even then the correct response is to keep using the ones that answer, which is the response to every state in this section except one.

The trap of the familiar route

This state feels much worse when the quiet route is the one you always use, because habit has made it feel like the address rather than an address. That reaction is the subject of habit picking for you.

The fact is identical whichever of the three is quiet. Only the feeling changes.

What this state is worth

It is worth eight seconds and a paste. Everything beyond that is a reader over reading a single sample, and over reading is what turns a non event into a search.

What to record, if anything

Nothing. There is no value in keeping a note of which route was quiet on which evening, because the observation does not accumulate into anything a reader can use and it feeds the invented ranking.

The only pattern worth noticing is one route being quiet across separate sittings while the others answer, and even then the response is unchanged: keep the string, use the ones that answer, and do not conclude anything about the market.
