The pattern in the table

Everything saved is shared. Everything about the current visit is not. That is the whole rule, and it is short enough to carry around.

Put another way: the market's memory of you travels between routes, and the route's memory of you does not.

Why the second column causes all the trouble

The four unshared things all produce symptoms that look like the shared things having failed. A signed out inbox looks like a missing inbox. A repeated entrance check looks like something being wrong. A stale figure looks like a different balance.

So a reader meets the unshared list constantly and interprets it as evidence about the shared list. Every study in this section is, underneath, an attempt to break that one habit.

The test to apply in the moment

  1. Is the thing you are looking at something the market saved, or something about this visit?
  2. If it is something saved, the route is not the explanation and you should look elsewhere.
  3. If it is about this visit, the route is the explanation and nothing is wrong.
  4. If you cannot tell, assume it is about this visit, because that is true far more often.

The one case that escapes the rule

The rule assumes both routes are what they claim to be. If one of them is not, then everything above stops applying, because you are no longer comparing two views of one thing.

That is a different question from equivalence and it is handled in the difference that matters. It is rare, it is serious, and it is reached only after the ordinary explanations have genuinely been exhausted.

What the boundary is worth

A reader who holds this line can use all three routes without anxiety, which is the only way the set is worth anything. A reader who does not will use one and treat the others as risky, which converts a set of three into a set of one and throws away the entire benefit of plurality.

Where the reasoning stops

This site cannot see inside the market and every claim above is a claim about what follows from three addresses being routes to one place. Where a reader needs certainty about something specific, the honest answer is that an outside reference cannot supply it, and no amount of confident phrasing on any page would change that.

How to use the table when you are actually stuck

Find the thing that is behaving oddly, look at which side of the line it sits on, and act accordingly. If it is on the shared side, the route is not your explanation and you should look elsewhere. If it is on the unshared side, the route is your explanation and nothing is wrong.

Most readers who arrive at this section are somewhere in the middle of that decision and do not know a line exists. Having it as a table rather than an argument is what makes it usable in the moment rather than only in retrospect.

If there were only one address

There would be no line to draw. Everything about a visit and everything the market had saved would sit behind one address, and no reader would ever have to work out which category a symptom belonged to. This entire section is the cost of having somewhere else to go, and the boundary is worth learning because the cost is otherwise paid as confusion.
