The logic of the common factor

Three routes are three separate paths to one place. What they share is the market at one end and you at the other. If all three behave identically, the cause is at one of those two ends.

That is the entire diagnostic value of having a set, and it is available to anybody who tries all three before concluding anything.

Why your end comes first

Not because readers are careless, but because your end has more moving parts that can change without announcement, and because it is the half you can actually test.

Testing the other end is impossible from where you sit. Testing your end takes ten seconds. Doing the cheap test first is simply good order of operations.

The ten second test

The second test

Try one of the three again after a genuine gap. Paths are rebuilt, conditions change, and a second attempt some time later is a different test rather than a repeat of the same one.

Repeating immediately is the reflex and it is close to worthless, because it reuses much of what just failed.

Things on your side that produce total silence

  • A connection that is up in the sense that a light is on and not in the sense that traffic is going anywhere.
  • Software that has been running long enough to be in a state it will not get out of by itself.
  • A network you are on that treats this kind of traffic differently from ordinary traffic.
  • A string that is not the string you think it is, which is not a network problem but produces the same silence.

Why readers skip this

Because the market is the interesting hypothesis and your own connection is the boring one. Interesting hypotheses get tested first even when boring ones are more likely, and this subject is unusually prone to it because the interesting hypothesis is also frightening.

Fear makes the boring test feel like a waste of time at exactly the moment it is worth most.

What this rules out when it comes back clean

A clean result on your side does not prove anything about the market. It removes one half of the list, which is real progress and is the most a reader can get.

From there the correct move is the one in all three quiet: wait, and do not go looking for a fourth address.

The habit worth building

Check your own side before forming a theory. It is one sentence, it costs seconds, and it is the difference between a reader who occasionally has a slow evening and a reader who periodically concludes that everything is gone.

The order that costs least

Cheap tests first, then narrow, then wait. It is unremarkable as a method and it is not what people do, because the frightening hypothesis has a pull that the boring one does not.
