A list longer than the set

Lists grow. Sets do not grow at the same rate.

The question

What does it mean when a page lists more addresses than the market publishes?

Set out flat, in the arrangement they were handed over, with nothing added. Nothing on this page marks one of them as the main one, because on this site that would be the one claim the studies are all arguing against. This reference opens none of them and measures nothing about them.

How a list grows

Entries are added and rarely removed. Somebody sends a string, it looks plausible, it goes on. A retired route stays because removing it feels like a decision and leaving it feels like none.

Over a long enough period the length of a list is a record of everything anybody ever suggested, which is a different object from a set of published addresses.

Why length is the visible signal

Almost nothing about a list ages visibly, as how a list goes stale sets out. Length is the exception, because growth leaves a mark that a reader can see without knowing anything.

It is a crude signal and it is nearly the only one there is, which is why it is worth using.

The specific risk of a long list

A long list cannot be checked by anybody. Adding a bad entry to a list of forty costs nothing and is unlikely to be noticed, because nobody is holding forty strings in their head to compare against.

That is what makes length a hiding place. It is not that long lists are dishonest. It is that they cannot be audited, by their readers or by their own authors.

What plurality contributes

Everything. A single address has no set for a stranger to join. A published set of a few gives an extra string a story: it can present itself as the fourth, or as the new one, or as a replacement for the one that went quiet.

The words that accompany an extra entry

  • New. A claim about time that nobody outside the market can support.
  • Updated. Refers to the page being written to, not to the set being confirmed.
  • Working. A claim about a check, and the check is not described.
  • Backup or alternative. Language that implies a rank inside the set, which the set does not have.

The comparison to make

Hold the list up against the set you already have and look for entries yours does not contain. That is the whole procedure, it takes seconds with a small set, and it is available only because the set is small.

An entry nobody else has is not proof of anything. It is the thing that needs an explanation, and the absence of one is itself informative.

Why the reflex to want more is wrong here

More options feels better everywhere else. Here, more entries means either a set that grew without announcement, which nobody can verify, or a list that accumulated, which is what usually happened.

A short list you can check is worth more than a long one you cannot, and this is the clearest place in the whole site where the small number is the feature.

The rule

Count first, read second. If the count is larger than the set you hold, the extra entries are the only part of the page worth your attention.

Why this is the most useful thing to teach a new reader

It needs no background, no software and no judgement about sources. Count the entries, compare with the set you hold, and look at the difference. Somebody who has read nothing else about this subject can do it correctly on their first attempt.

Almost everything else in this site requires the reader to have understood an argument first. This one requires them to be able to count, which is why it belongs near the front of anybody's understanding rather than deep in a section about lists.

If there were only one address

There would be no fourth entry to hide, because any second string would announce itself as wrong immediately. The entire technique described here, a string that gains plausibility by joining a family, requires a family. It is the clearest cost of plurality and it is paid by every reader who cannot count the set from memory.
