Problems switching will not fix

Changing route is a fix for exactly one class of problem.

Which problems does moving to another address actually solve, and which does it not?

Set out flat, in the arrangement they were handed over, with nothing added. Nothing on this page marks one of them as the main one, because on this site that would be the one claim the studies are all arguing against. This reference opens none of them and measures nothing about them.

The one thing it fixes

A route that is not carrying your traffic to the market. That is the entire category, and within it switching is an excellent and immediate fix.

Everything else on this page is a case where a reader reaches for the same move and gets nothing for it, sometimes at the cost of the work described in what is dropped.

It does not fix anything in the account

A password that is not working, a sign in that is refused, anything that has happened to your account: these are one object seen from three routes, and looking at them from a different route shows you the same object.

That follows directly from one account. It is the most common wasted switch, because the sign in screen is the point where a reader is most inclined to suspect the route.

It does not fix anything at the market

If the market itself is not doing something, or is doing it slowly, or has changed something, all three routes lead to the same situation.

The instinct to try another address when something looks wrong is understandable, since it is the only lever a reader has. Pulling a lever that is not connected to anything still feels better than doing nothing, which is why this study exists.

It does not fix your own side

If your connection is the problem, all three routes share it, because it is on your side of every one of them. Three attempts that fail identically point at what is common to the three, and that is usually you, which is quiet on your side.

A reader who does not know this will cycle through all three, conclude everything is gone, and go looking for a fourth address, which is the worst outcome available.

The list, in one place

Why the wasted switch is not free

Each one costs an entrance, a sign in, and anything unsubmitted. Doing it three times in a row while troubleshooting is a real amount of friction, and it accumulates while the reader is already frustrated.

The point of knowing what switching fixes is mostly to stop doing it in the four cases where it does not.

The diagnostic value of a failed switch

A switch that does not help is not wasted if you notice what it told you. It rules out the route, which is genuinely informative, and it moves you into the absence section with a much better question than you started with.

The mistake is not switching. It is switching repeatedly without updating the theory in between.

The summary

Switch once, deliberately, and see whether the problem is route shaped. If it is not, stop switching and start counting how many of the three behave the same way, because that number is the only diagnostic a reader actually has.

The pattern behind the whole list

Switching changes exactly one variable: which path your request takes. Anything that does not depend on that variable is untouched, and most of what goes wrong does not depend on it.

Holding that one sentence is more useful than memorising the list. A reader who asks whether the problem depends on the path will get the right answer for cases this study never mentions, which is the test of whether an explanation was worth writing.

If there were only one address

The lever would not exist. A reader whose single address is not working has no move available and is forced to consider what is actually wrong. Plurality supplies an action that feels like troubleshooting, works in one case out of five, and can be repeated indefinitely without producing any information.

What this study is not. It is not a troubleshooting guide for the market or for any software, and it only covers what changing route does and does not affect.
