The circuit is yours, not the address's

Two people opening the same address are not doing the same thing.

What part of the experience of opening an address belongs to you rather than to the address?

Set out flat, in the arrangement they were handed over, with nothing added. Nothing on this page marks one of them as the main one, because on this site that would be the one claim the studies are all arguing against. This reference opens none of them and measures nothing about them.

The thing that is not shared

The account is shared, the orders are shared, the messages are shared. The path your traffic takes to get there is not. It is built for your connection, it is not the same as anybody else's, and it is not necessarily the same as the one you had an hour ago.

That single fact explains most of the differences a reader will ever notice between two addresses, and it explains why nobody can publish a useful comparison between them.

Why this is the most useful idea in the section

Almost every observed difference between routes is a difference in path rather than a difference in destination. Slow and quick, opens and does not open, works now and did not before: all of these are much more often facts about a path than facts about an address.

A reader who holds this idea firmly stops attributing to the address things that belong to the journey, and stops building the ranking that assuming a ranking describes.

What it means for advice you read elsewhere

A page that tells you which address is fastest is reporting on paths from wherever that page was measured. Those paths are not yours. The measurement can be entirely honest and still tell you nothing applicable.

This is a stronger objection than the usual one about staleness. Even a measurement taken this second, correctly, would not transfer, because the thing measured is not a property of the address.

Why this site can say so little about behaviour

Everything a reader most wants to know about the three addresses lives in the second row of that table. Is it up, is it quick, will it work for me. None of it is a property of the string, and none of it can be reported by a page that is not you.

That is the real reason there is no status light here, ahead of the argument in why there is no uptime number. Even a truthful figure would be about somebody else's path.

What a reader can do with this

  • Treat a failed attempt as information about an attempt, not about an address, until it repeats.
  • Repeat before concluding. A second attempt takes a different path and is a genuinely new test.
  • Do not carry a result from one sitting to another, because the thing that produced it has been rebuilt since.
  • When all three behave the same way at once, look at the part that is common to all three, which is usually your side. See quiet on your side.

The limit of the idea

It can be over applied. If every failure is explained away as a path, a reader never concludes anything. The correction is repetition and count: one failure is a path, the same failure repeated across all three routes is a shared cause, and the shared cause is either the market or you.

What this means for advice generally

A large share of what is written about mirrors is somebody reporting their own experience of a path. Read as experience it is fine. Read as information about an address it is not, and nothing distinguishes the two once it is written down.

The test is whether the claim would still make sense if the writer had been somewhere else at the time. If it would not, it is a fact about a journey, and journeys are not transferable between readers or between attempts.

If there were only one address

The idea would still be true and there would be nothing to compare it against. A single address gives a reader no way to notice that the variability is theirs rather than the service's, because there is no second route behaving differently at the same moment. Plurality is what makes the path visible, and then invites the wrong conclusion about what it means.

What this study is not. It is not a technical account of how the network builds paths, and nothing here depends on the details of that.
